Wow, such a headache, Jodie.

My own experience has been much more positive. I imported my Outlook contacts into Gmail in Spring last year without any bother. Just before Christmas I got my new Android phone and was expecting hassle in importing my contacts, but it was almost seamless (in fact, it happened so quickly, I thought it hadn't worked at all!).

Transferring the contacts off my old mobile via the SIM was more tricky, but a lot of that was down to Windows Mobile (never again!), and - like you - at least it forced me to clean-up and de-dupe my phone list (I also like how Google Mail helps you merge records - I had three phone numbers and four separate email addresses for one person, now all aggregated in one place).
